Crossing through Toronto’s Cabbagetown South neighbourhood, Berkeley is a typical downtown low-rise residential street characterized by numerous Victorian single-family homes and a mature tree canopy. In the past decade the neighbourhood has become increasingly more desirable - highly sought after for its convenient location. Unfortunately, the existing residential typologies and Victorian urban fabric severely limits housing availability. In this speculative project, we looked for intensification opportunities within the existing fabric. By combining several adjacent lots and introducing a new residential typology, the proposal is able to introduce additional living units without disrupting the scale and rhythm of the street. The result is increased density without affecting street character.
